Having proved his Shakespearean credentials as Prince Hal and Henry V in the BBC’s acclaimed recent history plays, Tom Hiddleston is looking forward to his next role, as a vampire in Jim Jarmusch’s Hollywood film Only Lovers Left Alive.
“It’s basically about what would vampires do if they were existing in the world on a day to day,” the Old Etonian star of War Horse tells Mandrake. “The answer is, they would be poets, musicians, writers.”
Sporting chance?
Ed Miliband has appointed Tony Blair as a Labour adviser, with particular emphasis on how to maximise the economic legacy of the London Olympics. How, though, is the former prime minister doing at maximising his own sporting legacy?
The Tony Blair Sports Foundation, which he set up after being forced out of 10 Downing Street?, received just £36,400 in donations last year, compared with £348,200 in 2010.
Despite the fall in income, staff costs rose at the charity, which aims “to increase the participation in sport of young people and adults across the North East”, from £37,600 to £98,200. It has, however, helped to ensure the legacy of Jeanette Pickard, the former manager of Blair’s office in Sedgefield. She is the charity’s chief executive.
Amelia Hempleman-Adams explores fashion jungle
Aged 16, Amelia Hempleman-Adams, became the youngest person to ski to the South Pole. The daughter of the explorer David Hempleman-Adams may, however, soon be embarking on a different sort of adventure.
Amelia’s father says she is considering a career on the catwalk. “Amelia has been chased by agents to do modelling and all sorts – a completely different field to adventure,” he says. “I was amazed how the coverage of her took off around the world. It was extraordinary.”
Amelia, who is studying for her A-levels at Prior Park College, a private school in Bath, completed her 97-mile trek across Antarctica last December. Her father says he doubts that she would follow him into a life of exploring. She is “into fashion”.
Off to the beach
Steve Cram, who won Olympic silver in the 1,500m in 1984, was given two tickets for the event at London 2012.
“I said to my son, 'I’ve got the beach volleyball or I’ve got the the men’s 1,500m final.’ He replied: 'Can I go to the beach volleyball, dad?’ ”
